Siamese Dreams: For All Dreamers Inside and Outside Thailand

Mommy’s Turn to Dream

I have never owned a non-airline eye mask in my life. In the pre-baby days, a blackout curtain was what did the trick to block out day light when I wanted to sleep in. Seven years ago, I traded half of my king size bed space to barely shoulder length edge space on our now family bed. I do not really mind sharing bed with my children, but that little night light really bothers me. Luckily, I still have the airline eye mask buried at the bottom of my drawer. Naturally, after years of being intimate with my eyes, they no longer look good enough for business class. I still remember how my jaw dropped when I first saw the artwork-like eye masks by Siamese Dreams at a boutique. Not only the patterns were out of the world, instead of a thin layer of fabric, there was fluffy cushion within the cover. It felt so comfortable, yet light, on my eyes. I had to scream “Where have you been all my (mum) life?!” Indeed, the eye masks were so pretty that I thought I could wear them as hair bands. Needless to say, I bid my airline mask stash adios.

Bedroom to Beach Dreamers

Siamese Dreams products stand out in any shop. The patterns alone are pieces of art. They are the interpretations of wild imagination, jungle, fantasy kingdom. I feel that in a tropical country like Thailand dresses should be as colorful and fun as the scenery. The main reason why I fell head to toe in love with Siamese Dreams was that sensational transformation when I put on their clothes. Not only I feel as if I am wearing an artistic canvas, a very soft and comfortable cotton canvas, it transports me to a whimsical world wherever the fabric pattern portrays. I felt pretty and sophisticated. Siamese Dreams has become my go-to if I need a pick-me-up, or if I need some Thailand women’s clothing that is simply going to wow someone I am about to meet.

The Dreamer Behind Siamese Dreams

The rendezvous with Mika Wassenaar, a long time Phuket resident who has turned Siamese Dreams into a real-life success, took place in a dreamy open-air café by the lake. (Which will be blogged about in the near future, so watch this space.)

“I was already in the buying and production business back in Canada where I grew up. I used to have so much fun in Thailand and loved to visit Phuket where my ex-boss had a holiday home and was very kind to let me stay at from time to time. So when the opportunity came when we could be anywhere for our young family, I chose Phuket. I always feel at home and at ease here. The dream began when COVID hit. Working from home became the norm and I actually could not find anything that I could wear at home while not feeling like I was at home.”

“That was when I knew that I had to create something to fill in that blank. Outfits that allow us to turn daily routine to beautiful rituals. I wanted to create something timeless, gorgeous, while being playful. And I wanted to pay tribute to Thailand as well— by making something that really reflected the fun in Thailand. For a lot of people who come to Thailand clothes shopping is a big part of the appeal, and Siamese Dreams adds a unique new option for women seeking honest and inspired Thai fashion. Indeed, the brand’s intentions are the reasons why I am such a big fan. At first glance, they are instantly desirable. As days go by, you are actually on a journey of discovery on the small details and thoughts that have gone into their products. They look so fantastic, yet functional that makes it effortless to dress and feel good in one self on even a mundane day, at the comfort of one’s home. It serves as a perfect ritual to remind ourselves of self-care and self-love.

Self-proclaimed introvert, Mika was grateful for how Siamese Dreams is not only being a business baby where she puts in her effort and time to build and develop, but at the same time, nurtures her in a spiritual way with lots of returns in her personal growth. “It really pushes me out of my comfort zone. I am someone who’d rather staying at home. However, everyone along the business, be them artists, retailers, production partners, being so interesting and inspiring that definitely motivate me to take the initiative to talk and work with.”

The Dreamy Designs and Details

Every Siamese Dreams product is a wearable piece of art. The material is of super soft but strong 100% cotton, the brand’s signature cotton voile, which is light, comfortable to dress in all day, while giving a silky finish. In addition, since authenticity is important for people who are interested in buying clothes in Thailand, all Siamese Dreams women’s clothing is made right here in the Kingdom of Thailand. Each pattern is the aesthetic result of collaboration with Thailand women’s clothing makers of Thai heritage, many of whom are based right here in Phuket.

Thailand women’s clothing collections are being divided according to each “painting” or pattern. There are camisole, pyjamas, robes, dresses, trousers and various accessories. Most expensive piece being the Luxe Set, retail at 5,000 baht , while least expensive item is The Luxe Scrunchies, retail at 350 baht. (At time of writing, 1USD is trading at 34.78 THB)

Dare to Dream More

When asked whether there were more dreams to chase for the brand, Mika excitedly shared with me about bags (Yay!!!) that were being produced as we spoke, and a new product to develop. Spiritual growth and self-care is something very dear to her heart, Mika explained, “ I am working on developing a series of Thai wisdom card decks, which will be a marriage between Thai art and wisdom to help us to develop a daily ritual of self-caring, discoveries and inspirations. In fact, the beautiful prints that we create offer us such opportunity to develop a variety of products that can enrich our everyday life. Yet, I think I would take it slow, focus on what I can personally handle, as I would like to be heavily involved in every product in every step of the way.”

By now, if you’re planning on buying clothes in Thailand I hope you are already dreaming to get a hand on some Siamese Dreamers goodies. Lucky for you, it’s no longer a dream.
