Sisters of Siam: A Kimono that Hugs Like a Sister Does

There is nothing glorious about this kimono. I wear it for the intimate sense of touch of the soft cotton that came from Northern Thailand, the delicate cutting that falls nicely onto my silhouette. Most of all, I feel it’s a light and easy companion I can tuck into my bag and take everywhere with me. It shields my shoulders from the fierce sunlight and provides me with just the right amount of warmth that I need after the sunset or when I go into a shopping mall where the air conditioning is blasting. And, if and only if, I could turn back the hands of time, I would have my bridesmaids wearing this kimono during my hen’s night and for my own bridal preparation. For it is a simple and understated elegant kimono that hugs you just like a sister does.

A Brand Manifested from Personal Struggles

“Sisters of Siam is more than just a fashion brand—it’s a reflection of my own personal journey and the values I hold dear,” said Fairlyta Promtho, Creative director and founder, as she shared how it all began. In fact, Fair told me that Taitaitanthai.life is the first blog that she has ever shared her brand story with!

“I come from a mixed background, Thai and Swedish, with my childhood growing up in Sweden while a separate part of the family lived all the way on Koh Samui, Thailand. There was a life-changing moment for me, at the age of 19. I took the leap and moved to Thailand, permanently. And it’s been a wild adventure ever since. I met my partner and started building my own family. Becoming a mother was a transformative journey, but it also came with its fair share of challenges. Along that way I struggled to find space for myself and neglected my own self-care all while lacking a strong support network of women to surround myself with.”

The “Teen Mum” Breaking Out of Her Cocoon

“During those early years with my daughter, I found myself constantly questioning whether I was doing things right. It was disheartening to encounter comments from others implying that my age prevented me from understanding the complexities of motherhood. These encounters fueled my determination to create a positive change! It was during the COVID-19 pandemic that I stumbled upon the art of crafting polymer clay earrings, and it became a therapeutic outlet for my creativity. As I explored deeper into the craft, I couldn’t help but notice the abundance of talented artists on the island. Their creations were often confined to local markets, so I founded a space called the Fair Artisan Store— a space where their unique pieces could be celebrated. Over the course of a year, I immersed myself in the world of retail, drawing inspiration from the remarkable women who surrounded me.”

“It was through this process that the seeds of Sisters of Siam were planted. The brand became a vessel for me to channel my own growth and share my journey with others. I wanted to create a community that embraced sisterhood, offered guidance, and fostered a sense of support in all aspects of life. Sisters of Siam stands as a reminder of our collective strength and the transformative power of self-care. This is what I believe in, and it’s what makes Sisters of Siam so unique and empowering.”

Beyond Sisterhood

Sister of Siam’s essence goes beyond aesthetics, it also values sustainability. The brand is committed to ethical practices and minimizing its environmental impact. From the choice of materials to a conscious production process, it strives to create locally-made Thai women’s clothing that not only looks good but for customers feel good in terms of their impact on the world around us.

In Thailand clothes shopping can be frustrating for many women. However, inclusivity is at the heart of everything Sisters of Siam does. Celebrating women of diverse backgrounds, body types, and ages, fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment is Sisters of Siam’s goal— to curate a space where every woman can find herself represented and celebrated. Buying clothes in Thailand is now a lot more fun and empowering for every woman, thanks to Fairlyta!
